PBS piece about independent bookstores struggling during the pandemic, which is related to the story I am covering for this class.

There were many difficulties I came across when putting together my final project for this class, but I was able to learn a lot from them. The biggest challenge for me was figuring out a bunch of new software that I was not familiar with before. For the video package in particular, I had never used Premiere Pro before and when you first open up the interface, it looks very complicated and intimidating. The LinkedIn Learning tutorial helped a lot with figuring out how to use the program effectively in order to make my video package for the project, although it took a lot of trial and error on my part. After I was able to finish my video package, I found that I was a lot more comfortable with the program and I’m glad I have the experience of using it to edit clips together to make a coherent video that can enhance stories I write in the future.

Another challenge I faced was scheduling interviews. This is always a challenge when writing a story, but coordinating interviews with several different store owners and managers in a busy time of the year was especially difficult for this story.

Despite the challenges, I found that it’s very satisfying to put a coherent and fleshed-out story together. Going through the whole process of writing the story, taking photos and making an accompanying video and infographic taught me a lot about how stories with additional elements are more engaging and I look forward to using this experience in the future.
